Welcome

Special Education at BSSD

The Bermudian Springs School District provides Special Education Services to children who have physical and/or mental disabilities and are in need of special education. These disabilities include intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, emotional disturbances, autism, orthopedic impairments, learning disabilities, deaf or hearing impairments, blind or visual impairments, speech and language impairments, or other health impairments. Gifted education is also provided to students who are eligible.

In compliance with state and federal law the Bermudian Springs School district gives notice that it conducts ongoing identification activities as a part of its school program for the purpose of identifying students in need of special education and related services. Screening activities for students who are thought to be exceptional are provided throughout the school year. Screening activities of the district include Level I screening, i.e., group based data, report cards, health records, cumulative records; Level II screening, i.e., hearing, vision, motor, speech and language screening; Level III screening, i.e., parent communication, assessing needs, recommending and providing instructional support.

Bermudian Springs School District will provide to each protected handicapped student a free, appropriate, public education, without discrimination or cost to the student or family. Related aids, services or accommodations which are needed to provide equal opportunity to participate in and obtain the benefits of the school program or extra-curricular activities are also available.

A range of services and programs are maintained to provide each disabled student with the type of service, level of intervention, and specially designed instruction needed for the student to be successful in school.

The determination of the need for special education is based upon the evaluation and recommendation of a school-based multidisciplinary team. Members of the team include parents, teachers, school psychologist, principal, and other members as requested. Parents who suspect that their child may be exceptional may request a multidisciplinary evaluation at no cost, at any time. This request should be made in writing to the building principal in the school where your child is enrolled. Parents of handicapped children between the ages of three and five years should contact the Lincoln Intermediate Unit #12 to receive information about Early Intervention Services. Call (717) 624-4616 for more information.

Educational records maintained on students will not be revealed to any persons except those associated with the Bermudian Springs School District unless prior permission to release records has been obtained from the parent(s). Specific information about these procedures, dates and times of screening activities, rights of confidentiality, assess to educational records, rights to due process, or the provision of service is available through Ms. Brooke Shaffer, Director of Special Education, Bermudian Springs School District, (717) 528-4113.
