Child Find Activities

The Bermudian Springs School District (BSSD) engages in numerous public awareness activities to alert residents about procedures for accessing special education programs. These activities are referred to as “Child Find”. Public awareness notices are included in the district calendar, district newsletters, the newspaper (2 times per year), and brochures available in each school building in the district. Bermudian Springs School District also provides evaluation services to families in non-public schools, making it possible for them to access evaluation procedures for their children. In coordination with BSSD, the Lincoln Intermediate Unit #12 coordinates awareness exercises for non-public schools giving additional public notice of the services available to all families who are residents.

In compliance with state and federal law, notice is hereby given by the Bermudian Springs School District that it conducts ongoing identification activities as a part of its school program for the purpose of identifying students who may be in need of special education and related services. Parent permission for student evaluation does not automatically imply consent for special education services and parents will be informed of all evaluation results and recommendations for future services. If your child is identified by the district as possibly in need of such services, you will be notified and asked to participate in all applicable procedures.

If you believe that your school age child may be in need of special education services and related programs, screening and evaluation processes designed to assess the needs of the child and his/her eligibility are available to you at no cost, upon written request. A parent request form (Evaluation Request Form), is available in each building office, to submit a written parental request for evaluation. Early intervention services are available through the Lincoln Intermediate Unit #12 for young children (age 3 to school age). You may request screening and evaluation at any time, whether or not your child is enrolled in the district’s public school program. Requests for evaluation and screening should be made by completing the Evaluation Request Form or contacting the building principal, or Director of Special Education.

All information gathered about your child is subject to the confidentiality provisions contained in federal and state law. The district has policies and procedures in effect governing the collection, maintenance, destruction, and disclosure to third parties of this information. For information about those policies and procedures, rights of confidentiality, access to educational records; as well as for further information on the rights of parents and children, the provision of services, and evaluation and screening, you may contact the building principal or the Director of Special Education.
