Health Education Resources

The Bermudian Springs School District is committed to the health and safety of our students. In accordance with Pennsylvania state law, we provide the following resources to help families identify, prevent, and manage health conditions that may impact a student’s well-being and academic success.

Tick-Borne Diseases & Lyme Disease (Act 131)

Under Act 131 of 2024, school districts must provide information regarding Lyme disease and infectious ticks. Because Pennsylvania consistently ranks among the highest in the nation for Lyme disease cases, understanding prevention and proper tick removal is essential for families.

PA Department of Health: Tick-Borne Diseases – Information on various diseases carried by ticks in Pennsylvania and how to identify them.
PA Lyme Resource Network – A non-profit resource focused on education and support for families navigating Lyme disease.
Test Your Tick (PA Tick Research Lab) – A service provided by East Stroudsburg University where families can send ticks to be tested for pathogens.

Type 1 Diabetes Information (Act 122)

Pennsylvania Law (Act 122 of 2024) requires school districts to provide information regarding Type 1 Diabetes to parents and guardians. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that is one of the most common chronic diseases in children. Early recognition of symptoms is vital.

Concussion Awareness

Protecting our students from head injuries is a priority for both our athletic and academic departments. A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that can have a serious effect on a young, developing brain.

CDC "Heads Up" Program – Access educational materials, checklists for parents, and recovery tips for students returning to school after a head injury.

Vaccines

Staying current with immunizations is a vital part of student health and is required by the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH) for school attendance. We recommend consulting with your child’s pediatrician first for all vaccination needs

State Requirements: View the School Vaccination Information (English) or Información de Vacunas (Español) for specific grade-level mandates.
Where to Get Vaccinated: Local options include CVS (by appointment), East Berlin Pharmacy (walk-ins welcome), and the Gettysburg Department of Health. You can also find nearby providers via the Public Map of Vaccine Access.
Flu & COVID-19: Routine seasonal vaccines are available through WellSpan Health and UPMC.
